First impressions
I was already looking forward to the first test ride even before the shoes arrived at my desk. They immediately impressed me as soon as I took them out of the box. The packaging is stylish and neat. I consider a great racing shoe to be one that is neither too pushy nor too aggressive. My positive impression was confirmed as soon as I put the shoes on – they felt firm and stable. I ordered a size 46 since our website recommends ordering the Crossmax Elite one size larger. This was certainly the right thing to do and despite initial reservations I really felt comfortable in the shoes. I read plenty about the technologies used in the shoes on the manufacturer's website; including the glass-fiber-reinforced shoe sole, the firm tongue and the practical twist lock system. I was curious to see how these special features would work in practice when I tried them on for the first time that evening.

The Practice Test
I tested the Mavic Crossmax Elite Shoes over the course of a month across distances totalling 400km. I mainly rode through the woods surrounding Berlin but I also took a longer trip to Mecklenburg. The conditions along the forest trails were perfect for testing out the shoes.
My feet felt comfortable even after many hours in the pedals. Admittedly, my feet are relatively narrow so I don’t know how those with wider feet would fare. Initially, I was a little skeptical of the rotating lock system, but over the weeks I grew to like this clever mechanism. The ErgoDial adjustment system effectively changes the fit of the shoe. With the help of the dial, even minimal adjustments are easily made. The sturdy Ergo Strap closures made from Kevlar ensure stability and the best fit. The stiff sole is perfect for a fixed start and thanks to the pronounced stud profile, the shoes offer excellent grip in tight passages. The only aspect of the shoe that left me disappointed was the neoprene tongue, which despite being very comfortable, was a bit too warm for my taste.

Conclusion
The shoe is stiff enough to apply a good deal of pressure (and pull) to the pedal but not in an uncomfortable way. For me this shoe offers the perfect mix of performance and comfort! The locking system really impressed me because it guaranteed simple, precise adjustment and security. I can recommend the Crossmax Elite shoes without hesitation to all hobby mountain bikers who have narrow feet. The same applies to all those who like to switch between gravel biking and mountain biking without wanting to use several pairs of shoes. The shoe is light and stiff enough for fast and long distances. Whether on or off the road, these shoes really help you get the best out of your trip!
