Keep Your Back Free - This Source Hipster Hydration Belt Quenches Thirst On The Trails

For some people, mountain biking is more than just a hobby. Some let it get under their skin and shape their lives around their passion. Our editorial colleague Bastian is one of these people. He’s been biking for 20 years and truly has the biking bug! For several years he has been working with us as a product expert and copywriter. He loves all kinds of biking and you’ll find him faithfully hitting the trails several times a week! Here’s what he had to say about the SOURCE Hipster Hydration Belt…

The first Impression

Let’s admit it – the bum bag fashion trend of the 90s was dreadful. Even the recent revival as a nostalgic hipster fashion accessory is extremely questionable. However, as a functional backpack alternative on the trail I find the concept very interesting. I don’t normally wear a backpack as my bike rides tend to be short and sweet. I always have a water bottle attached to my bike, and I was intrigued to try an alternative hydration solution which still ensures I don’t have to carry a backpack. I was curious to see how the SOURCE Hipster could enhance my riding.

Testing the SOURCE Hipster Hydration Belt

The strap
The SOURCE drinking strap is made of really lightweight rip-stop nylon which is slightly padded. Compared to similar products, the SOURCE hip bag feels much more comfortable to wear. The minimal design of the bag ensures a low weight (when empty). The bag features a large main compartment with an internal division which is accessed from above via an easy-to-operate zipper. There is enough space in the compartment for a mini pump, tool set, compact camera or a small rain jacket. On the outside of the main compartment are two small side pockets with Velcro closure and a surprisingly deep middle compartment with an overlapping opening. They imitate the classic tricot-three-sectioning and are as intuitive as possible. Whilst testing the bag, I carried a mini tool and puncture repair kit in the small side pockets and my smart phone in the medium sized pocket. Despite not being splash-proof, the two side pockets are easy to reach and are ideal for keys and other such objects. Last but not least, two zip-grommets at the bottom of the bag offer a flexible way to attach outside protectors or a rolled rain jacket until they are needed.

The drinking bubble and the mouthpiece
The SOURCE drinking bubble holds 1.5 litres of fluid. According to SOURCE, the bubble boasts a whole series of patented solutions in terms of material, surface and antibacterial coating. As a result, the contents remain fresh for days and even weeks. The filling of the drinking bubble is very easy thanks to the very large opening. The SOURCE's own Widepac closure design is reminiscent of closures for waterproof packing bags and the closures of freezer bags. Despite my initial skepticism, this design is totally watertight. With a little care when filling, the bubble does not need to be removed from the bag. The tube can also be separated from the bladder for easy cleaning. The Hipster is delivered with a Helix™ mouthpiece. The angled valve is absolutely tight under pressure, has a built-in safety catch and a cap for extremely dusty conditions. The valve is opened and closed via a rotation mechanism. I found the additional cap provided unnecessary and I left it at home. The downside of the spill-proof Helix™ mouthpiece is a slightly slow fluid flow. Other users recommend upgrading to the separately available SOURCE Storm ™ drinking valve which doesn’t feature a safety lock.

The carrier system
The unique design of the hipster hydration belt gives it a striking look and set it apart from comparable drinking bags. The support system’s chest straps can be adjusted easily and quickly to suit individual needs. Unlike many backpacks, the chest strap is not an optional feature but important. It is through the chest strap that that the bag remains fixed on the shoulders. The hipster sits securely and comfortably while riding. Over rough terrain, the freshly filled drinking bubble sits firm without ever affecting the "free back" feeling or pulling at the shoulders. The weight continues to lie on the hips. The bag can also be strapped more loosely, without having to worry about slipping.

My conclusion:

For those who prefer functionality, the Source Hipster Belt is an unobtrusive alternative to a drinking bag for day trips. Even without the braces the filled bag sits flat and close to the waist giving it a secure feeling. With the braces, the filled bag is fixed a little better. Whether engaging in Enduro downhill runs, uphill ascents, jumps or steep sections, you quickly forget you’re carrying anything at all. The best thing about the Hipster Hydration Belt? It doesn’t get caught in low hanging branches, which is always an issue with normal backpacks.
